THE ENGINEERING RECORD, FILE 13 OF 19

Safety and standards, and the TEK wearability standard

  • ISO 13482 (personal care robots including physical assistant exoskeletons): relevant only to the future assist frame, not to the bands.
  • IEC 60601: not applicable. TEK is not a medical device and makes no medical claim.
  • IEC 62368-1: the applicable product safety standard for the electronics and charging.
  • IEC 62133-2 and UN 38.3: battery use and transport, required before any kit ships.
  • IEC 60825-1: the 940 nm VCSEL in the VL53L8CX is Class 1 eye safe under all reasonably foreseeable conditions including single faults, per ST's datasheet and user manual.
  • Skin: OEKO-TEX Class II textiles; ISO 10993-5 and 10993-10 plastics.

TEK wearability and safety standard, pass and fail

Metric Pass Fail
Weight per band under 200 g over 250 g
Total on body, no phone under 900 g over 1100 g
Runtime, typical duty a full waking day under 8 hours
Continuous wear before rest 2 hours with no skin injury any skin injury under 2 hours
Skin temperature under a pod under 40 C 42 C or above
Wash cycles survived, bands 20 or more under 10
World to skin latency, ahead 100 ms or less, measured over 150 ms
World to skin latency, ground 150 ms or less, measured over 200 ms
Doorframe at head height, 1.5 m detected every trial any miss
Glass door detected every trial by sonar any miss
Step down detected before the leading foot any late detection
